Gabriele Grunewald

Se n'è andata Gabriele "Gabe" Grunewald: la 33enne nativa di Minneapolis da anni combatteva contro un carcinoma adenoido-cistico, una forma rarissima di tumore che colpisce le ghiandole e che negli ultimi anni si era purtroppo espansa fino al fegato.

Negli anni Gabe era stata molto attiva sui social portando avanti la sua battaglia e continuando, anche nei momenti piu bui, a correre. Il 5 maggio il suo ultimo messaggio dove si scusava di non poter correre la 5km organizzata dalla sua associazione BraveLikeGabe che si occupava della raccolta fondi per la ricerca.

La Grunewald in carriera era stata campionessa statunitense indoor dei 3000m ed aveva rappresentato la sua nazione ai Mondiali al coperto 2014 dove chiuse 10ma. Il giorno successivo alla diagnosi della malattia, avvenuta nel 2009, Gabe era scesa addirittura in pista stabilendo il suo record personale sui 1500m indoor. Il suo 4'01'18" outdoor è ancora oggi uno dei miglior crono di sempre mai corsi da una statunitense. Nel 2014 corse anche in Italia dove vinse i 1500m al Meeting di Lignano Sabbiadoro con un eccellente 4'05"22".

Il marito medico nei giorni scorsi aveva scritto su Instagram di un evento incredibile con protagonista la moglie che dopo una ricaduta, con valori del sangue a detta dei medici "incompatibili con la vita", si era sorprendentemente ripresa tanto da desiderare un hamburger per pranzo. A distanza di pochi giorni però lo stesso marito, con un commovente post, ha annunciato il precipitare della situazione con Gabe portata in un'unità speciale per i malati terminali.

Nella nottata tra l'11 ed il 12 giugno l'addio comunicato dal marito Justin.

Gonna need you guys to send me some extra #Brave vibes tonight as I am so, so very bummed that I won’t be able to make it to the @bravelikegabe 5k tomorrow — because I am in the hospital with an infection and need a procedure done bright & early in the AM. Literally the worst timing ever but I’m working with an all-star crew of friends, family, sponsors, and the ACCRF to make sure it’s a great race in St. Paul. . It’s not lost on me that maybe this is one of the most poignant ways to show just how critical research is. Cancer is nothing if not incredibly inconvenient and we need more options. I wish I didn’t have to show it in this way because there’s so many people I’d love to meet and catch up with tomorrow (including my grandma who I don’t see very often ??). . But I’m gonna be brave and fight these fevers and hopefully the procedure will help me out big time. ?? Prayers very much welcome. . Have a heck of a time out there and celebrate what you’ve helped support and accomplish through the research grant!
